"Some people think they're always right."
Yeah, that sentence came from a line of lyrics from the song You Only Live Once by The Strokes. That line is my introduction to The Strokes.
From the moment I heard that lyrics, it struck me. Like yeah, that's true that some people think they're always right.
The assumptions here is "some", not all people, but some. This includes me. There are some moments where I think I am right. Best believe, some people also act like that.
Right and wrong. As I grow older, the line between them somewhat blurs.
As a kid, I watched Power Rangers, and in that series, it explores good versus evil, or right versus wrong.
As my taste in entertainment mature, some series explored that evil characters might have the right reason to be "right", and good characters somewhat do the wrong things as them should.
I still fondly remember when I heard the line of lyrics from the song thru my friend's Walkman. As I plugged the earphone to my ears, I was intrigued. I was 13 at that time. My mind had not yet reached the capability of an adult to process heavy topic.
Yet, at that time, I felt "shit, this is true AF". The rebellious teen inside me rejoices as I heard the lyric.
To be right, and to be wrong. Is there a spectrum between those? A grey area despite the black and white. Before we continue, there is a difference between being right and thinks right.
People that think they are always right, might be they are wrong. Same goes to people that thinks they are always wrong, maybe they are right.
Wait, is there a person living in this world who always thinks that they are wrong? It doesn't make sense.
Like for real, there is no such things like that, right?
People who think they are right are normal, because it feels like a virtue, and human nature craves it. Meanwhile, people who think that they are wrong are much rarer, because it made them feel like they are a failure, a loser.
To be honest, people think that they are wrong are the one that killed the ego and be the bigger person. No one likes to admit they're wrong. If you don't trust me, ask the person in a marriage.
When we argue with other people, often the aim is to win the argument, being "right". What if the point of argument is not to be right and wrong, but to see from a different perspective, lives in different shoes, respecting the differences.
So, I think, it is not important to "right" all the time but also being "wrong" long enough to be someone better.
Cause, in the end, nobody becomes wiser by always being right. But many stay the same by refusing to be wrong.
Wassalam.
